Mayfield School Challenge: MMC was approached to explore capital fundraising for a soft sensory room.

The Challenge
Mayfield School is a large and inspiring special needs school in Torbay, supporting over 300 children with complex learning difficulties. Every day, the dedicated staff go above and beyond to create a safe, nurturing and empowering learning environment for their pupils.
A key space within the school, the Soft Sensory Room, had become outdated and worn. Pupils themselves described it as “boring” and due to health and safety concerns, it was often closed. The school recognised the urgent need for a refurbished, stimulating and safe sensory environment, one that could combine modern soft play with interactive sensory equipment to meet the needs of its learners.
Our Role
Looking to work with a local charity fundraising consultancy, Mayfield partnered with MMC, just down the road in Newton Abbot. From our first visit, we felt warmly welcomed by the school’s passionate staff and inspired by their vision.
We provided Mayfield with our Fund Write Service, helping to:
- Develop a compelling Case for Support
- Identify and apply to suitable national and local charitable funders
- Support the team to craft a successful GoFundMe campaign “Save our Soft Sensory Room”
We also offered fundraising mentoring and guidance throughout the process, helping build internal fundraising confidence and capacity.
The Outcome
In just 9 months, Mayfield hit their fundraising target, and the Soft Sensory Room has been completely transformed.
The updated space is now a hub of learning, play and sensory exploration. Pupils are already benefitting from the new equipment, with a space that is safe, inclusive and genuinely exciting to use.
